MC-Scow Spreader Bracket Modification Reduces Failures

MC-Scow Spreader Bracket Modification Reduces Failures

The MC-Scow spreader bracket transfers load from the spreaders to the mast. The standard bracket can sometimes fail, due to either momentary high loads, such as during heavy air jibes, or due to repeated stress. The loads can also cause the mast to kink. When he got a new mast, Noel Neuman substituted the standard bracket with a different style to reduce the potential for failures. The replacement bracket is adjustable and attaches further aft on the mast, near the bolt rope slot, where the extrusion is thicker. Noel has seen no evidence of wear over several years, despite sailing in some heavy air events.

    1. The spreader bracket is actually several parts made by Selden Mast (.com). Here are the individual parts: Front Strap Bracket P/N 522-180-01 The Aft Lug Casting (pair) is P/N 522-179-01 and the Adjuster (Pair) is P/N 503-766-01. It seems though that these parts are getting hard to find, though sometimes you can find them as a kit. When I changed over to this style, I bought two sets just in case I needed spare parts. It wasn’t too spendy then, but searching for the part numbers just now, it looks like the prices have gone up.

Keep in mind that any system that attaches to the mast at the front, and as far back as possible will put the loads into the mast extrusion at points that can accept the load. Have a look around and you may find a system that works just as good but for a more reasonable price. Any time you have a component that is pushing in on the extrusion wall will cause a dent to form, which will cause the mast to collapse when under extreme loads. Noel
