2022 SailZing Year in Review

2022 SailZing.com Yearly Review

2022 has been an incredible year.

Engagement on the site continues to rise and we can’t go to a regatta without having people tell us how valuable SailZing.com sailing education content is to them. Thank YOU for spending time with us on SailZing.com and for letting us know that it’s helping! We’re glad that it’s making a difference in your racing.

Thank You

We would like to start out by also thanking people who have given us a lot of support throughout the year, the ILYA Organization, Candace Porter, John Porter, Dave Berg, Eddie Cox, Marek Valasek, Emlie Veinot, Allan Terhune Jr, Ted Keller, Mark Ebeling, Mark Sigel, Gordy Bowers, Steve Rotier… and too many others to list.

Foremost, I want to thank my business partner and friend Allan Haeger for the thousands of hours of studying & writing and hundreds of conversations that he has conducted to bring much of the content to these pages. He has a lot more in mind for 2023, but in the meantime, he won the 2022 John Hunt Memorial Trophy for ILYA Member of the Year! Congratulations Al!

ILYA Racing Curriculum

The amazing ILYA Racing Curriculum, launched in concert with the Inland Lake Yachting Association, is assisting sailing educators lift up their programs. Currently USA only, we’re looking at what it would mean to make it available globally.

Racing Rules of Sailing – Rule 42

We did a deep dive on Rule 42 here and here with Lake Beulah’s John Porter, a perennial friend of SailZing.com. This topic is especially critical to sailors in the Laser, Optimist and Melges 15 classes, but is applicable to all fleets. We’ve found that some sailors are pushing the boundaries here and crossing them, so this is timely information.

This follows on the heels of our Racing Rules of Sailing tutorials that we delivered in 2020-2022 in partnership with the ILYA Fair Sailing Initiative.

In 2022, we also published an article on Sailing Scoring Notations – Sailing Scoring Notations – SailZing.

Melges 15 Introduction

The Melges 15 took center stage as it took off throughout the ILYA and world, so we shared an interview with Eddie Cox of Melges Performance Sailboats discussing how it fits into the sailing mix. Since virtually everyone is new to this boat (first introduced in 2020), we created a comprehensive assembly video with Ed Furry of Sail 22 (Thanks Ed!) to show, from sprit to rudder, how the boat goes together, complete with a line routing diagram by SailZing.com.
