Loose Jackstays – Watch for Mast “Pulse”

Brian asked Dave how you know when you’ve set the new, thicker jackstays correctly for a C-Scow. Dave explains what signs to look for in the mast during a breeze that hints that the stays are too loose. Dave said that with the thicker jackstays on a C-Scow, you can set them looser. You know that they are too loose if you’re sailing upwind in a breeze and you see the mast give a little pulse. If the mast gives a pulse, then the jackstays are too loose and the mast is going beyond center. This could lead to broken masts.
